Japanese Resources (づ ̄ 3 ̄)づ

A place for dedicated to my unconventional approach to learning the Japanese language.

Books

Pretty good book of natural sentences covering multiple levels of difficulty. Comes with a CD if you purchase it - as the text is intended to be shadowed.

  • Shadowing: Let's speak Japanese! (ISBN 978-4-87424-850-8)
  • JLPT Specific book series - I find pretty good

  • TRY! 日本語能力試験 N3 (ISBN 978-4-87217-902-6)

  • Dictionaries

Probably the go to online dictionary:

  • Jisho
  • Best offline dictionary (imo):

  • JEDict (Offline dictionary)
  • I find this glossing tool quite helpful - it breaks sentences down in to each seperate component with definitions:

  • WWWJDIC

  • Grammar:

  • All About Particles (ISBN 978-4-77002-781-8)
  • Imabi (Website)
  • Tae Kim's Grammar Guide (Website)
  • Tae Kim's Grammar Guide (PDF)

  • Japanese Vocab App

I made this application as I found that Anki, despite all the things it does right, is not for me.

My approach to learning vocab is to just repeatedly expose yourself to it. This application helps in doing so, by using two options - 'yes' or 'no'. Yes will move on the next word and pressing no will add it to a list in where the word will appear again in so many words.

The application pulls vocab from a .csv file, appropriately called "vocab.csv". This is a very large file and I would advise renaming it to something else, and then creating a new "vocab.csv" and then adding x amount of words a week.

I find the sweet spot for myself is somewhere between 25 and 50 new words per week. I would recommend doing it 2 to 3 times a day - prioritising new words. I might also suggest adding the newest words to the start of the vocab.csv file so that you see them first.

The application has two modes - "in order" and "random". I developed the application in Python using Tkinter for the GUI. While it is not the prettiest thing in the world, I find it is quite effective for me anyway.

Below is a link to download it. There you will find a .zip for a version that should come with all the dependencies and runs as a .exe file, and then the python source code and .csv file if you want to run it that way instead.

I hope it helps you as it has me :3

  • Mega Download
  • Note: There is no licence, do whatever you want with it lol. Its not on github because I don't like github >:3

Known Bugs: There is a bug where upon reaching the end of the deck it then goes to the start again - however an error message will appear in the console. The error message does not really affect the usage however.

Please reach out to me via the contact page if you find any bugs :3
